Blogoversary Giveaway #12

Giveaway #12 is for two books. Either to one winner or two, depending on the response. Copper and Candles and Hearts and Harvests, book #1 and #2 of the Michigan Historical Series by my friend and author Amber Stockton (formerly published as Amber Miller). I look forward to getting copies of these for myself soon too! To read the first chapter of these or her other books go to her website here.

Copper and Candles (Michigan Historical Series, Book #1, HP #843)Hearts and Harvest (Michigan Historical series #2, HP #867)

—A young lady of means discovers that keeping secrets, no matter how noble the intent, demands a price that she and a refinery worker, with all their resources, might not be able to pay.—

"Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts." ~ Proverbs 21:2

Society teas and garden parties, shopping, gossip—

Life as a young lady of means may be fun, but Felicity wants to do more. Unfortunately, she finds that her position and wealth can sometimes hinder her efforts to help those around her in need. Thus, when a charity case falls ill and cannot work, Felicity determines to go to work as a commoner in Detroit's dangerous factory district.

Relationships become complicated, however, and she soon finds herself falling in love with a worker from the copper refinery next door. She knows her family would never accept him as a suitor, but what's a girl to do? What she doesn't know is that Brandt has his own secrets and hides his identity just as carefully as she. Brandt and Felicity soon discover that deception—no matter how noble its intent—demands a price that even they, with all their resources, may not be able to pay.

Can they survive the storm when truth is revealed?

—A destitute young man fights society's mores to win the hand of his privileged sweetheart.—

"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." ~ Galatians 6:9

William's is a true riches to rags story...

Once members of Detroit's elite society, the Berringer family lost everything they had in the financial crash of 1893. From a life of influence and privilege, they now find themselves working a potato patch alongside immigrants and other destitute folk on borrowed land. William's resentment toward his current situation—and mostly toward God for allowing it—simmers barely beneath the surface. All it takes is one charitable visit to the fields from a lovely society darling to burst his façade of acceptance.

Annabelle Lawson, convicted by her pastor's admonishing words, begins delivering food and water to the workers on her father's donated land. But as she learns the stories of the people who work there, she becomes increasingly drawn to their plight. Especially that of the inscrutable William Berringer.

Can Annabelle and William overcome the stigma placed upon his family by a society that once embraced them? Will her parents remember their own meeting or forbid this budding romance altogether?

  1. A very good question : ) For me, it all depends on the book. Some "quickie" reads which are for fun and not for keeps are fine in mass market form. I donate or give away those books. Books that I love and want to keep should be deluxe trade paperback or hardcover.
I would enjoy both of the giveaway books. gcwhiskas at aol dot com

  4. Hardcover are easier for reading, but I usually get trade paperback. Price difference is usually the reason. No, I keep them if they really inspire me or teach me something vital.
Of course, I'd love both books, but I would love to share also. I'd like the Copper and Candles if I can choose.

  7. I would love to read either one!
I love books that are larger than a paperback but not a hard cover book. They are easier to hold on to for hours reading, which I do if I can!

  12. I'm more apt to buy paperback because they are cheaper but I'll read both. I have both in my permanent book collection. It does seem that hardcover books last longer than others and are less easy to rip or tear. I'm not a fan of real small print.

  15. I want both books! I prefer hardcover books for my permanent library - they just look better on the shelf and last longer. But to actually read I prefer paperbacks - I like to bend the pages all the way back. Bad for the spine though! Thanks - alicedemskehansen at gmail.com

  19. I like trade paperbacks most, because I like to lay down when I read, and the hardbacks get too heavy after a while trying to hold them up. I would like to win both books, they sound really good! Thanks!

  22. Even in saying those book sizes there is no standard. Even those can be different.
As for personal preference, I really don't mind all that much. Sometimes I want a small, light-weight book to fit in my handbag when I'm going to an appointment or on the train. Otherwise I really don't mind - although if all were the same size they would fit better on my bookshelves. One thing I really hate is having books in a series a different size even when they are published by the same publisher.

  25. I don't know that I prefer one or the other. Paperbacks, and mass market paperbacks at that, fit into my purse, but if I'm reading a book, I take it with me no matter what!

Terrific question and a great giveaway!

    I follow. ;)

  26. I so would want both books. It depends on the book. If it's one I really like and has a series, then I would prefer Hardback. Those are easier to maintain and take care of. But if it's one I would give away then Mass market is totally fine.

I already am a follower through google. And I'm a fan on facebook.

  27. I definitely prefer hardcover books. Whenever I buy paperback, I get really nervous about bending the spine and cover. Both books sound awesome!

  29. I actually like all formats. I like mass markets because they fit in almost any purse so you can take them pretty much anywhere. Hardcovers are nice to collect, and I actually like trade paper because they are more flexible, so you can read them without creasing the spines! Format doesn't really make me decide whether or not I keep a book...it depends on whether or not I like the story!

  31. What is your opinion and preference of book sizing?
I can read small books as well as large books. They both read. I don't like real big books so small-med. size is good size but if I want to read the book I don't care the size I'll read it. Love giant print. eyes aren't what they use to be.

Do you prefer Mass Market, Trade Paperback, or Hardcover books? Why?
Guess it depends on the book. I love hard back gift type books. They are so nice to give and lay out on table. Trade paper back is fine with me.

Does the format affect whether or not you keep the book in your permanent library?
format doesn't matter if I'm going to keep the book.

    - Do you want one book or both? -
I'm from MI and would love to have both of Amber's books. I've read other of her books.

    Thanks for the giveaway

  32. Good question. I like Mass Market - they fit nicely, two deep and two high, on my bookshelves, and they survive stacking. I like Trade Paperback too, mostly because I have quite a lot, and they're the same size as some hardbacks to they stack pretty decently too. But the extra-large paperbacks and extra-large hardbacks annoy me. They just don't fit when I want to keep them.

  39. I prefer trade paperbacks a wee bit over mass paperback and hardbacks, but not enough to quibble over.

What I really HATE is when a series comes out in one format and then switches to a different format. The most current example is The Goose Girl series by Shannon Hale. The first 3 books are paperback and the fourth is hardback.

I feel so greedy, but I want both books. They really sound good and the covers are beautiful. Thanks for the lovely giveaway.

  45. The size of the book doesn't matter to me that much. But as for the format, it has to be print. I don't really care for ebooks. As far as keeping the book on my shelf after I read it, the book has to be one I loved so much that I would read it again and again. I would really like to have Hearts & Harvest. Please enter me. Thanks!

  51. I like them for different reasons. Hardbacks stay in such nice condition even when lent out numerous times to family and friends. They also look much classier on the bookshelf when others are perusing :) Paperbacks on the other hand tend to be more comfortable to snuggle up with (for me anyhow). I have habit of dragging my book off to appointments, the park, my bath or pretty much anywhere else I can get away with. The paperback tends to fit into the diaper bag easier. Honestly though, so long as it's
a good book....it could be written on someones arm for all I care! lol
