Product Review: @Bummis Super Star Print Covers (limited edition Super Whisper Wrap) #clothdiapers

appleblossomreview150 200

In case you have not heard me say it before. I love Bummis. I love everything there is about Bummis.  In detail here, I explain what all I love about the Bummis prefold and cover cloth diapering system. Today I just want to tell you, eight months later I still love Bummis.

The Super Whisper Wraps are my favorite. The Super Brite Wraps are nice, but they just aren't quite the same to me. The prints available in the SWW are so much more exciting and I prefer the inner cover layer over the wipe-able water proof material. These covers are a much better fit than the others I have tried, such as Thirsties or Polar Babies (not to be confused with Polar Bummis which I have no personal experience with).

Bummis Super Whisper Wrap

This is a state of the art Aplix-closing cover made from a super resistant waterproof laminate sandwiched between two layers of a soft polyester knit. Attractive and comfortable, this fabric can withstand even the rigors of industrial washing and drying. The generous cut of this cover makes it suitable for any type of prefold or fitted diaper.
Special features of the Super Whisper Wrap:
  • Very adjustable. The Aplix closures have an innovative overlap design that ensures a custom fit on any baby.
  • A durable, heavy-duty elastic around legs and tummy which will not wear out with repeated industrial washes.
  • Soft, smooth polyester knit bindings for a comfortable, stretchy fit, and a leakproof seal.

*Thanks to ThanksMama.com I was able to try out some medium sized Bummis Super Whisper Wrap Diaper Covers in their limited edition print Super Stars Yellow and Sage.* Knowing how much we loved the small sized SWW I was already certain that we would absolutely love the mediums.

I knew that I would love them, but never how much! These prints are so darling cute in person, even better than the photos! The only problem that I have had in the past with the SWW is that there were not enough choices in prints for my taste. When I found out about the Super Star Prints I was so excited! Now after seeing them in person I am in complete love! Using colors such as sage green and yellow these are great covers for any baby girl or boy. Had these been available when AppleBlossom was smaller I would have dived into buy them then. I still consider getting smalls for the next time around... maybe...

Super Stars - Limited Edition Super Whisper Wraps!

Sage Stars. Sage Stars on White, Lemon Stars & Lemon Stars on White

These are available for a limited time only, so get them while you can! In the fabric and style of our best-selling Super Whisper Wrap, these two-tone star prints are really too darn cute!

These are my favorite prints of diaper covers and I really do love them and highly recommend them. If you go buy some, get them from ThanksMama.com and you'll not beat the customer service. Never had we had a leak and they have aged very well over the months. The cousin of these diapers the Super Snaps are my SisterL's favorite diaper cover as you can see here and the only thing that would make her happier would be to have Super Snaps in the prints that you find with these fabulous SWW *hint hint*!!

Product Review: Bummis #clothdiapers

Soon after finding out that we were pregnant with our AppleBlossom we knew that we were going to cloth diaper and so I went to my SisterL for advice. As you can read back on this post, she strongly prefers a Bummis system to cloth diapering. *Thanks to Shirley from Bummis, I was able to review an Infant sized
Bummis Organic Cloth Diaper Kit* and I'm sold! This is my preference for cloth diapering pretty much for all the time. In the weeks to come I'll fill you in on other methods I also use and enjoy. But I love Bummis brand!

First off, what did I get in the kit?

The Infant size contains:

• 24 infant size Organic Cotton Prefold diapers (4 x 8 x 4 layers thick)

• 4 Super Whisper Wraps – small

• 2 Super Brites – small

• 3 rolls Bio-Soft liners – small

• 5 reusable Fleece Liners

• 1 Fabulous Wet Bag – large (available exclusively in the Kit!)

• User Guide

My only qualm with the kit is that it is that there are no Super Whisper Wraps with Snaps, they all have the hook and loop Velcro instead. And for those of you than are unaware, the Super Brites are covers that close with velcro as well. The kits are gender neutral in that they come with a blue wet bag (that has a zipper and draw strings), green Super Brite, white Super Brite, Celery SWW, Froggy Pond SWW, and a white Super Whisper Wrap. Not that there is any problems with those patterns, but if you want to girlify (Margaret-ism) your cover stash, you have to buy a Flower Print SWW separately. And now they have just made available some fabulous Limited Edition Star prints! I cannot wait to get some for my medium stash!!

So what to tell you about first? How to use the system? What I think? Here goes...

This type of diapering system consists of using a prefold DSQ (diaper service quality) cloth diaper and a waterproof cover. No Snappis or pins for me thanks! In my case I use the Fleece Liners for naps and night time (although these days a prefold does not quite handle all night, and she will wake up and request a change ever so politely...) and when I am expecting a messy diaper we will also prep with a flushable liner as well which makes clean up so much nicer. Being exclusively breastfed our AppleBlossom's diaper system is pretty simple. Take off the diaper, toss the cover (if not messy) in one pink bucket, toss the soiled prefold into another. If I'm using a liner I toss it in the trash bucket or toilet (which ever is closer). Pick up another prepped diaper and flip up the prefold and secure the cover, replace baby outfit and we're good to go. Pick up the soiled diaper pan and dump the diaper into my big (dry) diaper pail. If there is an extensively messy diaper, I will rinse it out before adding it to my pail. The plan in the future for when she starts solids is to get a diaper sprayer (DH - you listening??).

DH says that he likes these with prefolds better than pocket diapers, but that he likes all-in-ones better than these. He tells me that if I did not pre-assemble these, he would ignore them and reach for an AIO to skip the extra step of assembly. Yet when these are ready to go, he is more than willing to strap them on her little bum.

Assembly... Once I run a load of diapers. Okay explanation here. Prewash cold, wash cold with Charlie's Soap (tell them I sent you), wash warm, tumble dry low. Some times if there is more than usual, they will either need a second tumble or I hang them up in our bedroom on the drying rack. Now, once I run a load of diapers, I dump the basket on the bed and go to assembly. It takes about 15 minutes and is rather entertaining to my wee bairn (that's for you SisterB). I fold all the prefolds into a try fold, opposite the seams and make a stack. Then once all the diapers are separated out from the covers, I place a diaper in a cover fold it over properly and set it in my box ready to go. Once the box is filled onto the changing table shelf it goes and it's Daddy approved.

I love this system. It's so simple. Sure there is a few minutes effort to prep the diapers with assembly, but oh well I hardly even notice it anymore. I was able to use these diapers almost first thing home from the hospital and at four months and 12 1/2 pounds there is still lots of room left of the velcro tab for her to continue to use them on her itty bitty waist. Right now I'm starting my list of what I want for her medium size and wondering when we'll get there. So far I'm planning a Baby sized Organic Cloth Diapers Kit that will give me 18 baby size prefolds, 2 SWW - medium, 2 SBrites - medium, 1 roll Bio-Soft liners - large, 5 reusable Fleece Liners, and of course a fabulous wet bag and user guide. In addition to this I already purchased a medium Flower print, and plan to get at least one each of the Super Star print covers. I'm also not adverse to getting some more Fleece Liners so that I might be able to use one on every change and not have to "guess" which one will consist of a nap time.

More details for those so inclined...

  • I love these prefolds. In my stash I have some Under the Nile prefolds, a plethora of Gerber prefolds both 4x8x4 and the slim organic ones, some green edged Indian prefolds, a few Bambino Mio prefolds and the Bummis by far take the cake (although the Bambino Mio ones are pretty great too!). After washing they become more and more absorbent and shrink a bit, but from beginning to end they are so soft!
  • The SWW are my favorite. The SB are nice, but they just aren't quite the same to me. The prints available in the SWW are so much more exciting and I prefer the inner cover layer over the wipe-able water proof material. These covers are a much better fit than the others I have tried and will never go back to anything else such as our past attempts of Polar Babies, Thirties, and so on.
I highly recommend everything in the Bummis Organic Cloth Diaper Kit and will definitely be using the next size kit when our AppleBlossom reaches the next size range.

As for just starting a deeper conversation, as I'm sure you're overwhelmed by all this... This system is the cheapest by far than any other cloth diapering system and it's organic! And for night time, we have started using Kissaluvs v1 and v2 inside a cover and love it! But that's for another time and day...

WHERE TO BUY: You can purchase your own Bummis products many places. My suggestions are to either click the button on the right side bar (through my affiliate link) to go to Kelly's Closet. OR go to Diaper Junction (their customer service is unbeatable and they are where I get all my duds!). On average the Super Snaps (white) cost about $11-12 and the print covers are all about $12.25-12.75. For starting out, you'll definitely get the best bargain in a starter kit.

#ClothDiapers Education

When I first found out that I was pregnant, I knew that I was going to cloth diaper full time. It was about two or three days after finding out that I was pregnant that I started my cloth diaper (CD) research and then spent the next 35 weeks continuing it. *grin* I have been thinking over and preparing my mind to write up some great educational CD posts about my experiences and opinions of various products, but apparently I am not fast enough! My AppleBlossom is one month old today, and we have three weeks of CD experience under our belt, but I have a friend begging with questions, and they must be answered ASAP to make her a CD convert with her 3 mo old... so here is the beginning of my unorganized thoughts...

There are four main types of CD:
PF (prefolds) with covers
pocket diapers
AIO (all-in-one)
fitted diapers with covers

In addition to there being a million kinds of diapers out there with types and brands, there are also a trillion websites to choose from. So far in my experience I have three recommendations. In person in GA I recommend my friend Rebecca's shop The Natural Baby. Online, I recommend SoftClothBunz - I have ordered from numerous times and had fabulous customer service (SisterL goes here in person in VA) and Kelly's Closet which I have an affiliate button on my right side bar. Both have fabulous blogs that provide great and valuable CD information. http://www.clothdiaperblog.com/ and http://www.theclothdiaperwhisperer.com/

Upon coming home from the hospital, most all of our diapers were still too big for my little AppleBlossom bum, plus her cord would be rubbed, so we had to wait a few days more. The exception to this was my Organic Kissaluvs Size NB fitted diaper, which in retrospect I wish we had about a dozen more of for her first few weeks. As well as a prototype gDiaper (you'll have to wait for more information about that one...).

After that we were able to start using our Small Bummis covers (including Super Whisper Wraps and Super Brites and borrowed from my sister Super Snaps) with the Bummis Unbleached Organic PF.

And our Small gDiapers...

And since then, we have added in Small Perfect Size Fuzzi Bunz (FB) and so far a yesterday trial of the OS (one size) FB.

As well a yesterday once trial of a OS AIO bG (bumGenius) Organic diaper, Bambino Mio newborn, Bamboo Baby AIO OS, Mother-ease Sandy's fitted, Thirsties Wrap cover with an infant PF (green edges), and a Polar Babies snap cover with an infant PF (green edges).

Additionally diapers we have to try soon are an Infant AIO Kushies and a Small AIO Imse Vimse (english translation "Itty Bitty"), these start at 10 and 11 pounds respectfully.

*In the near future, I plan to have a detailed review of each diaper method we try.*

For now, some answers to some questions...

Do you think that four bummis whisper wraps and three dozen DSQ prefolds would be enough for a three month old? As it stands, with the disposables, we change our baby after every feed, right now eating five times a day. I read that you have to change more often with CDs, but that's fine if I can use the same cover, right?

36 PF should get you through two maybe three days, depending on just how productive of a gastrointestinal tract your little bit has working. As for four covers, in my opinion that is pushing it. Behind here - at one month of age, we are changing AppleBlossom every two to three hours during the day, and every four or five hours at night. As she grows and becomes more regulated, it will be less often. DH says it is probably about 8-10 diapers a day on average. There are the messy diapers that go off to one side almost making a blow out and then you cannot use the cover again until washed. There are other diapers that while changing the flaps fall back into the mess, then you cannot use that cover again. So depending on your directional of attempted blow outs and how meticulous you are with removing the cover clean and mess free you can use them again. The other thing is to not use the cover twice in a row. Moisture gets saved in the cover, and you should let it sit out at least one diaper change before reuse.

We personally have 46 PF (24 Bummis Unbleached Organic PF and 22 green edged newborn PF borrowed from SisterL) and 12 Bummis covers - 4 SWW, 2 SB, 6 SS (borrowed from SisterL).

Also, to CD when you're out, what do you do with your soiled diapers? I mean, does a zippy bag work? Do I have to buy one of these "wet bags" I keep seeing on all the sites? Also, how do you store your diapers at home while you're accumulating a load to wash?

First off, at home I have a Swaddlebees laundry bag that I use in my diaper pail (see image below). This is a trash can that we bought at Lowes. The bag or pail liner, fits perfectly. I also have the Bummis (I think it's Large) diaper wet bag. It has a zipper and does not fit in the pail. It is what we currently use while the Swaddlebees bag is in the wash, but I plan on getting another Swaddlebees bag when finances allow. These bags can easily hold two days or more of diapers, we usually start the wash before it gets full.

On the go, I have a Swaddlebees Wet bag. I would assume you could put about four diapers in this bag. I'm really having a problem with buying any wet bags/pail liners etc, without seeing them in person. But in GA there is not much choice outside of my friend's new shop near Athens, The Natural Baby.

Some people do use ziplock bags... I wouldn't, but it is done. For a trip out of town, it's my opinion that the Bummis bag would be perfect, it has a draw string and zipper. Both of the Swaddlebees bags only have draw strings.

Breastfeed dirty diapers can just be tossed straight in the bag. Formula-feed dirty diapers need to be dumped (not necessarily dunked) first (in other words get the fecal matter into the potty and not your bag). Once you have a used bag, I would be aware of it in your diaper bag, and not jostle it unrealistically to avoid a spill.

Taking reusable diapers with you does take up extra diaper bag space, but they're so worth it.

Also, I've seen that Prorap covers are about half the cost of the Bummis...are they a viable option?

My sister says: Prowraps are similar to bummis but didn't have snaps when I was shopping. Personally, I know nothing about them. I have not heard anyone talk about them, and I do not know many stores that sell them. Already Bummis, especially Super Snaps are a bargain in comparison to almost all other types of CD.

I read your blog posts about CDing, and see that you just use the covers. Have you tried anything else? I'm also loving the Bum Genius One Size diapers, but dunno what I think of the pocket diapers vs. the cover + prefold. Any thoughts?

If you are referring to this post, then that is actually my SisterL's testimony and experience of CD and a shout out for Bummis bran. I am loving covers with PF. I also have used fitted diapers, my only complaint there so far is the expense. As far as the bG OS... we have only used one once so far to try it out and need more experience to say much. So far we can say that on our little AppleBlossom it is really bulky, yet that is to be expected on a diaper that fits 7-35 pounds on a little 9 pound-er. And for pocket... my experience there so far consists of the FB. Both the OS and the Small PS. We bought two Small PS FB with the microfiber insert and love them, they are DH's current favorite go-to diaper, yet we only have two. We also have 10 Small PS FB seconds (slightly flawed) borrowed from SisterL, these do not have inserts and thus we use PF with them. We use the PF in two different ways, one just laying the PF in the diaper and using it as a cover, and also inserting the PF as if it were an insert. So far I have had a few leaks with the FB inserted with a PF, but that may be a detergent residue issue from the past. No problem ever with my FB with the real FB inserts.

Bummis covers run at $11-12.50 and the PF run at $2-8 depending on the brand and type of fabric. FB with inserts run at $17.95-$18.95. So, really covers + PF is more of an economical option. Yet, pocket diapers are still completely more economic than sposies and come in a bunch of adorable colors and some prints. We are going to use the next 3-6 mo deciding what we want to buy in our Medium size stash, but at this point we are definitely planning on buying both more SWW, SB, and FB.

You know, I think I've decided to go with the Bum Genius 3.0 One Size diapers. They're pocket diapers, but I plan to use them with prefolds so that I don't have to buy as many, or wash them as frequently!

There are many different types and brands of diapers out there. I only wish I were able to try them all and I do plan to try as many as I can. At this point I have not been able to acquire a bG 3.0, but I have heard tons of people talk about them, and do believe they are a best seller. As I said previously, we use some pocket FB with PF. Using them as a cover like a Bummis, you might be able to come out with a clean one, let sit a change, and can use it again. Yet if you stuff the PF in the pocket, they are not reusable before a wash.

I was also wondering though...what detergent do you use to launder your diapers? I've been reading online and there are so many to choose from...

I use Charlie's Soap, but my second choice would be Country Save. This page from Diaper Jungle is the best comparison chart I have found so far. SisterL uses Charlie's for CD and has no problems. I use Charlie's exclusively, and have no issues. (If you go through Charlie's, please mention my name.) I believe these are both soaps that you can find in GA in stores like Whole Foods and Harry's Farmers Market.

Are you using a snappi or anything to hold your prefolds in place, or are you just laying them in the covers? I was thinking I'd just lay them in the covers...

At this point I have not used a Snappi (although I think SisterL was going to let me borrow one to see if I should get some). Click here to see folding instructions (with images), I of course with AppleBlossom use the "Girl Fold".

FYI
Glossary:
CD = cloth diaper(s), cloth diapering

OS = one size
AIO = All in One
bG = bumGenius
FB = Fuzzi Bunz
PS = perfect size

Other things I think to say at this point is to point out sizing information. At this point, AppleBlossom is one month old (today actually) and wearing a size Small. Typically, a size small is ~7-15 lbs. Medium ~ 15-35 lbs. There are of course the exceptions. Names vary, always check the pound or measurements.

Cloth Diapers: A Guest Post and Introduction to CD Bummis

As I mentioned previously in a post, SisterL is one of my main influences for wanting to go cloth with diapering future with my baby girl (now blogging affectionately named AppleBlossom). I asked her advice on brands and types and the first thing out of her mouth was "Bummis". She said if I buy anything, I should definitely invest there. So I asked her to be a little more detailed for my readers here so that I could understand and help explain why Bummis is a fabulous choice for CD.

I started cloth diapering DD1 (second child) at 3 months with the medium sampler kit from Green Mountain Diapers (before I knew of www.JuliesStuff.com or www.NaturalBabies.com--Karen at GMD still has great things and her guide is great to pass on to new mamas but shipping was always a lot so items had to be on sale to entice me). It had bummis, a re uz em AIO, prefolds, and some pull-on covers, shortly thereafter I bought two medium FB (only color in my small stash). I was just using during the day and at home.

I slowly added 2-4 at a time and, other than the Mother-Ease one-size fitted/wool cover for night time after DD2 was born, the bummis/prefolds were the best investment by far. Over the past 5 years (of constant use but in different sizes on DD1, DD2, DS2, and DD3), only two have lost snaps and one the company replaced with the forethought of sending the next larger size up (was a small; they sent a medium). My first prefolds are finally wearing out before the bummis covers!

It is very quick to fold up and insert the prefold (with the premiums' extra folded in the back for night time/front for boys during the day--except in larges where they lay flat). They almost always wash clean, and if not, 30 minutes in the sun takes care of most all stains (I think I have a dark chocolate ice cream stain from a well enjoyed first birthday on one but it is on the outside). I've never used bleach on them--just bac-out and an oxy cleaner a handful of times.

The ease of washing them with the diapers is great. I've stopped using anything I have to wash separately. I have dried them a handful of times as recommended if they ever seem a little less than waterproof and because of this trick, making them the perfect diaper cover fabric in my opinion, I haven't felt like I need to cry if one slips into the dryer thanks to little hands helping with the laundry.

I do like the snaps best (one less step in washing) and early on got over having to always snap evenly when one less snap fit better around the waist. Always check the legs fit when doing this but it has never been a cause of leaks for us. Their rise up the back has never been a problem when using over other fitted diapers (sometimes if midsizes, you have to size up for a fitted diaper if not using a prefold). The elastic edging has a nicer feel than with other brands I've tried. While some children will have a blowout no matter what they are wearing, I've definitely had less trouble with the bummis than any other diaper making them even more attractive since they are less expensive, too.

Additional pros:
  • easier to clean up babe vs pull-on cover
  • more uses before washing vs AIO
  • quick to put on with just one row of snaps
  • can be pre-stuffed for babysitters (DH is now DC qualified for all diapers)
  • easy to dump either in the toilet for a toddler or just dumping the wet/bf prefold in the washer/diaper pail otherwise
  • top flap over diaper keeps cloths from wicking moisture

Only cons:
  • snaps don't come in prints or colors
  • they lasted so long the label with the size on it has worn off :). I can tell the difference and it is really only on the mediums but little laundry helpers need the "M"s, lol!

Anyone else use Bummis? What are your thoughts?? UPS just informed me that my Bummis Cloth Diaper Organic Starter Kit (infant size) is on it's way! So, as soon as AppleBlossom joins us, I will be able to provide you with my full opinion as well. We are fairly certain that the kit shall arrive, before she...
