Mailbox Monday - May 11th, 2009

As far as the mailbox goes, this was a fairly uneventful week. Yet, I think for now that is probably a good thing, since I have a huge pile TBR and it does not seem to be shrinking in the normal manner and speed it usually does...

This week I received one book for review, and a second book from Paperbackswap.

-- Living during the American Revolution and the formation of a new nation, Margret Scott gets involved with a spy and a life of deception that could endanger herself, her family and the man she loves. --

"If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit; Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity." ~Job 31:5-6

Is deception fair in wartime?

Margret Scott finds she must deal with this question as she becomes attracted to the enigmatic Samuel Lowe. As the tensions grow between the colonists and the British soldiers and loyalists, Margret struggles to determine where Samuel's loyalties lie, despite his reassurances that they lie with the colonists.

Samuel's duties have him working for both sides of this war, and he is often torn between what is right and what is wrong. He promises Margret she can trust him, and Margret promises him she does.

But can promises born in deception be trusted? Can relationships built in uncertainty survive?

Read Chapter One

This is the third in a series that I have read for review from Amber Miller (Stockton). I really enjoyed the first two. You can read my reviews of those here (PP) and here (QP).

Secondly, from PaperBackSwap, I received a hardback copy of Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn. I read this last year and really enjoyed it. I am very eager to have my own copy, since I read it from the library. It makes me very happy. Now, I just have to get my hands on the other two. I do have an ARC of the third one, Silent on the Moor. But I do not have a copy of book two, Silent in the Sanctuary. I would really like to find a copy of the original print in trade paper back, since that is my favorite cover. Yet, all the copies that come up on PBS seem to be Mass Market. *sigh* That is what I get for being picky.

Silent In The Grave

These ominous words, slashed from the pages of a book of Psalms, are the last threat that the darling of London society, Sir Edward Grey, receives from his killer. Before he can show them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private inquiry agent he has retained for his protection, Sir Edward collapses and dies at his London home, in the presence of his wife, Julia, and a roomful of dinner guests.

Prepared to accept that Edward's death was due to a long-standing physical infirmity, Julia is outraged when Brisbane visits and suggests that Sir Edward has been murdered. It is a reaction she comes to regret when she discovers the damning paper for herself, and realizes the truth.

Determined to bring her husband's murderer to justice, Julia engages the enigmatic Brisbane to help her investigate Edward's demise. Dismissing his warnings that the investigation will be difficult, if not impossible, Julia presses forward, following a trail of clues that lead her to even more unpleasant truths, and ever closer to a killer who waits expectantly for her arrival.

I also have my reviews of these three books here (SITG), here (SITS), and here (SOTM).

Mailbox Monday - May 4th, 2009

Today, I could not get my picture to take quite right, so I will just introduce you to the books that entered my mailbox last week through words.

Hosted by the Printed Page, today I will share what books came to me last week. What did you get in your mailbox?

This week was not nearly as exciting as the last two weeks, but good titles non the less!

A second copy of A Passion Denied by Julie Lessman (Book#3 in the The Daughters of Boston series). This copy came from the publisher, while the copy last week was from a contest where I won an autographed copy directly from Julie. *grin*

Nothing But Trouble: a PJ Sugar novel by Susan May Warren. This one was for tour, but arrived on the day of the tour, so now it has to wait to be read. I hate it when that happens. I blame the mail truck, not the publicists. *wink* I am looking forward to this one however, even if it is contemporary. (There is a contest for a copy of this book going on over on Goodreads, click the image)

It's not fair to say that trouble happens every time PJ Sugar is around, but it feels that way when she returns to her hometown, looking for a fresh start. Within a week, her former teacher is murdered and her best friend's husband is arrested as the number-one suspect. Although the police detective investigating the murder--who also happens to be PJ's former flame--is convinced it's an open-and-shut case, PJ's not so sure. She begins digging for clues in an effort to clear her friend's husband and ends up reigniting old passions, uncovering an international conspiracy, and solving a murder along the way. She also discovers that maybe God can use a woman who never seems to get it right.

Nothing but Trouble (PJ Sugar)

Taking Tuscany by Renee Riva. This is a new one for me, it is for a tour coming up next Monday. Hopefully, I'll be prepared!

A. J. Degulio loved the idea of a visit to the Old Country... until her family decided to stay. It's 1972 and she's turning fourteen in a crumbling castle on a hill in Tuscany, wishing she were back in Idaho with her beloved dog, Sailor. In Italy, her blonde hair makes her stick out like a vanilla wafer in a box of chocolate biscotti, and she's so lonely her best friend is a nun from the local convent.

The challenges of roots and relatives are nothing new to A. J., but she's going to need more than the famous Degulio sense of humor to survive. Can't anyone see that Italy isn't really home? It will take a catastrophe - and a few wise words from a friend - for A. J. to understand that sometimes the only thing you can change is your perspective.

Taking Tuscany

Two books from Cheryl Wyatt from Steeple Hill Love Inspired. I almost always love Love Inspired books, but can never convince myself to buy them in store. I really dispise keeping mass markets, but when they come personalized and autographed you cannot take them from me! These are two that I plan to read and review for Novel Journey reviews.

Mailbox Moday - April 27th, 2009

Hosted by Marcia at the PrintedPage

A Passion Denied (The Daughters of Boston, Book #3) by Julie Lessman (autographed and personalized!)
Young Elizabeth O'Connor is the little sister John Brady always longed for. But she wants much more than that from her spiritual mentor. As she blossoms into a beautiful young woman intent on loving John, he must push back the very real attraction he feels for her. His past just won't let him go there. Unfortunately, Lizzie won't let him go anywhere else--until she discovers he is not all that he seems. Can true love survive such revelations? Full of the romance and relationships Lessman readers have come to love, A Passion Denied is the final book in the popular Daughters of Boston series.

My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier - sent via an awesome Paperbackswap friend
From the bestselling author of Rebecca, another classic set in beautiful and mysterious Cornwall.

Philip Ashley's older cousin Ambrose, who raised the orphaned Philip as his own son, has died in Rome. Philip, the heir to Ambrose's beautiful English estate, is crushed that the man he loved died far from home. He is also suspicious. While in Italy, Ambrose fell in love with Rachel, a beautiful English and Italian woman. But the final, brief letters Ambrose wrote hinted that his love had turned to paranoia and fear.

Now Rachel has arrived at Philip's newly inherited estate. Could this exquisite woman, who seems to genuinely share Philip's grief at Ambrose's death, really be as cruel as Philip imagined? Or is she the kind, passionate woman whom Ambrose fell for... with a tremendous longing to be loved? Philip struggles to answer this question: Ambrose's estate, and his own future, will be destroyed if his answer is wrong.

"Miss du Maurier is... a storyteller whose sole aim is to bewitch and beguile. And in My Cousin Rachel she does both, with Rebecca looking fondly over her shoulder."

Rose House by Tina Ann Forkner
A vivid story of a private grief, a secret painting, and one woman’s search for hope

Still mourning the loss of her family in a tragic accident, Lillian Diamon finds herself drawn back to the Rose House, a quiet cottage where four years earlier she had poured out her anguish among its fragrant blossoms.

She returns to the rolling hills and lush vineyards of the Sonoma Valley in search of something she can’t quite name. But then Lillian stumbles onto an unexpected discovery: displayed in the La Rosaleda Gallery is a painting that captures every detail of her most private moment of misery, from the sorrow etched across her face to the sandals on her feet.

As the mystery surrounding the portrait becomes entangled with the accident that claimed the lives of her husband and children, Lillian is forced to rethink her assumptions about what really happened that day.

A captivating novel rich with detail, Rose House explores how the brushstrokes of pain can illuminate the true beauty of life.

T
he Postpartum Survival Guide by Paul Meier MD, Todd Clements MD, Lynne Johnson RN (part of a FIRST tour, but so perfect timing for me to read!)
Eighty percent of all pregnant women struggle with depression during or after their child’s birth. But there is good news about postpartum mood disorders—they are almost 100% treatable. In the definitive guide to postpartum depression, written from a Christian perspective by a team of experts including best-selling author and popular psychologist Dr. Paul Meier (Happiness Is a Choice), The Postpartum Survival Guide explains why this depression occurs, who’s at risk, how to treat it, and where to find God in it all. Coauthor Lynne Johnson, RN, provides a woman’s perspective on the issues of motherhood and depression. Using real-life stories and practical advice from medical professionals, The Postpartum Survival Guide offers hope-filled solutions that will help new mothers enjoy this special time in their lives. Plus, it also contains helpful resource for fathers, family members, friends, pastors, counselors, and medical practitioners.

Gold of Kings by Davis Bunn - This one looks right up my alley like an August Adams Adventure.
Will she decipher the mysteries leading to the sacred relic, or be defeated by the foes racing to claim it and destroy her?

A dealer in art and antiquities, Storm Syrrell arranges her life as she does her work -- into neat, orderly categories. But when her grandfather is murdered, all certainties are crushingly replaced by suspicions. She struggles to understand his death -- and decipher the frayed leather journal she finds hidden in his vault. Storm soon realizes that, far from being simply a discreet art broker, Sean Syrrell was a trusted go-between in the highest ranks of business and government in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

But not all of Sean's associates were quite so lofty. Enter Harry Bennett, a scruffy professional treasure hunter just released from a Caribbean jail, followed by Emma Webb, a US government lawyer with links to Interpol. Storm pushes her doubts aside, locks the door to her Palm Beach art gallery, and opens herself to the quest begun by her grandfather.

Their trail leads them ever farther afield -- London, France, Istanbul, Cyprus -- and ever deeper into danger. The thrill of the search is haunted by Storm's determination to bring Sean's murderers to justice. Storm and Harry in turn are targeted by an unknown assassin and saved from death only by Harry's split-second reactions.

Their quest homes in on the Copper Scroll of Qumran and controversial claims made by the Jewish historian Josephus. Hidden beneath the dust and mysteries of two thousand years lies the reason behind Sean Syrrell's murder and the find of a lifetime: a fortune in gold of great historical significance. Storm begins to grasp the potential magnitude such artifacts will have on contemporary religion and politics -- especially the competing historical claims to Jerusalem. Some seek to claim the gold for the treasure it represents; others are determined to destroy it. With the tangled motives of greed and power now in focus, old allies become new enemies. Through this, something unexpected tugs at Storm. The sacred relics represent a formidable metaphor to an ancient faith; will her search include a renewal of her own faith?

The Very First Easter by Paul Maier - This was a gift from DH's mother as she has one for each of her three children. Interestingly most reviews I have read are pretty negative, so we'll see... This book offers a historically accurate description of the events surrounding Jesus' death and resurrection through Scripture and beautiful artwork.

Ten-year-old Christopher wants to know the story behind the story and learns important details about this miraculous event that help him understand the season's celebration. He also discovers his own special link to the very first Easter.

The award-winning team of Paul L. Maier and Francisco Ordaz work together again to bring children a vivid picture of Jesus' last days on Earth. The Very First Easter makes a wonderful gift children, families, and friends. Recommended for ages 9 to 12.

Mailbox Moday

Mailbox Monday is hosted by Marcia at The Printed Page.
We share what books that we found in our mailboxes last week.

Stealing Home by Allison Pittman
It’s 1905 and the Chicago Cubs are banking on superstar Donald “Duke” Dennison’s golden arm to help them win the pennant. Only one thing stands between Duke and an unprecedented ten thousand dollar contract: alcohol.

That’s when sportswriter David Voyant whisks Duke to the one-horse town of Picksville, Missouri, so he can sober up in anonymity. He bides his time flirting with Ellie Jane Voyant, his unofficial chaperone, who would rather hide herself in the railway station ticket booth than face the echoes of childhood taunts.

Ned Clovis, the feed store clerk, has secretly loved Ellie Jane since childhood, but he loves baseball and the Duke almost as much–until he notices Ellie Jane may be succumbing to the star’s charm.

Then there’s Morris, a twelve-year-old Negro boy, whose only dream is to break away from Picksville. When Duke discovers his innate talent for throwing a baseball, Morris might just have found his way out.

Four individuals, each living in haunted isolation, each harboring a secret passion. Providence brings them together. Tragedy threatens to tear them apart. Will love be enough to bring them home?

Blood Bayou by Karen Young
To Save a Victim, Camille St. James May Have to Become One Herself.

Seven years ago, tragedy ended the troubled marriage of Camille and Jack Vermillion. Now, as head of the Truth Project, her life safe and orderly, she focuses her lawyerly skills on freeing wrongly incarcerated individuals on death row.

Jack paid a bitter price for his mistakes. No longer a high-powered corporate attorney, he's now pastor of a small church in Blood Bayou. Unsure of her own beliefs, Camille is highly skeptical of the conversion of this man she hasn't seen in seven years.

Then tragedy strikes again. Jack's sister is murdered, apparently by a prisoner Camille has set free. To prove his innocence, Camille must return to Blood Bayou. But that means facing the hostility of the town -- and Jack.

And as She Works to Find the Real Killer, Someone Is Determined to Stop Her...by Any Means.

Mailbox Monday - November 24th

Whew! It is so good to be back online and I'm attempting to get back on my routine of things, especially special posts like this one, Mailbox Monday hosted by the PrintedPage. Of course, I'm missing a few things here and there, with the books that have arrived in the last couple weeks or so... A couple that I know of the top of my head are:

From Paperbackswap.com - Stephen Lawhead's The Song of Albion Book #1 The Paradise War and Tracie Peterson's Kansas, a Barbour novella omnibus.

Also, the first book I received at home was Christmas Promises by LeAnn Weiss curtesy of Tracy McCarter of TBBMedia.com.

Other than that... let me think... Oh, there was The Jesus Who Never Lived, that one is for a FWC (First Wild Card) tour coming up soon... Deeper Water by Robert Whitlow, for a tour... A Taste of Murder by Virginia Smith that Ginny sent me herself when I won it from a contest. There was also a few others that are here somewhere that I know I'm missing... *sigh* Oh, I bought Alaska Brides from Wal-Mart by Mary Connealy, Kathleen Y'Barbo, and Cathy Marie Hake, I was astonished it was a better price than CBD.com for once!

I also bought My Heart is in the Lowlands by Liz Curtis Higgs when I was at the Lifeway at the Mall of Georgia at the book signing for Chris Coppernoll's A Beautiful Fall and Ginger Garrett's In The Shadow of Lions. Ginger did not get there until after I had to leave (I waited two hours!!! - until DH couldn't take any more, too much book talk he said... lol). There are probably others, but I'll stop there.

And now, specifically last week...

Monday:
Oklahoma Brides: Sooner or Later/The Bounty Hunter and the Bride/A Wealth Beyond Riches (Heartsong Novella Collection)From Vickie McDonough herself, I received an autographed copy of Oklahoma Brides that I won from author Trish Perry's blog. It is a Barbour omnibus of three previously Heartsong Presents published romance novellas. I love Barbour books!

Zondervan sent a copy of Brandilyn Collins' Dark Pursuit, I love the cover of this one, simple, green, and dark.

And then, lastly for Monday, I received a copy of Assaulted by Joy by Stephen Simpson from Danielle Douglas, for a FWC tour.

Tuesday (my birthday):
For a FWC tour, I received Marketplace Memos, written by a father and son team David & Jonathan Shibley. This is definitely not a normal type book for me, but it looks useful to those which it applies. This one comes to me thanks to Robert Parrish of New Leaf Publishing Group.

Wednesday:
Overdue, but none the less excited to receive via forwarded mail Enoch by Alton Gansky. I cannot help it, this one just looks cool. This comes to me thanks to LeAnn Hamby of Strang Communications. This is for a FWC tour taking place next Monday, November 24th, although I cannot promise to have read it in it's entirety by then.

Thursday:
From Whitaker House for two FWC tours, I received ARCs for Hannah Grace
(Daughters of Jacob Kane, book #1) by Sharlene MacLaren and Cursebreaker (The Order of the Scrolls Series) by Nancy Wentz. These both look fabulous! I first heard of Hannah Grace from Deena's A Peek at My Bookshelf and have been craving it ever since.

I also received a book that is very exciting to me! The Gates of Trevalyan by Jacquelyn Cook from BelleBooks. This is book two in a series, but I do not care, it looks fabulous, plus I am really exicted that I have found BelleBooks, a local Georgia publisher with mystery, urban fantasy, and romantic women's fiction. It is also my understanding that Jacquelyn has some titles published through Barbour Books.

Hah! If I was not happy enough, Miriam Parker from Hatchette Book Group USA decided to make my day with a box of goodies containing the following:
Flannery: A Life of Flannery O'Conner by Brad Gooch, coming February 2009 from Little, Brown & Co.
Drood [about Charles Dickens life] by Dan Simmons, coming February 2009 from Little, Brown & Co. This book is huge!! A good 773 pages.
The Cradle by Patrick Somerville, coming March 2009 from Little, Brown & Co.
Be Strong & Curvaceous (All About Us #3) by Shelley Adina, coming January 2009 from FaithWorks
Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly, coming February 2009 from Grand Central Publishing
The Girl She Used to Be by David Cristofano, coming March 2009 from Grand Central Publishing
The Alexander Cipher by Will Adams, coming March 2009 from Grand Central Publishing
YAY for ARCs!!!!!

Friday:
This morning I was surprised early, by UPS at noon. I had a package from a new friend over at Hatchette Book Group USA, a Jillian Jossem and did she have some treats for me!

The Beginner's Guide to Bears by Gillian Shields and Sebastien Braun, from Little, Brown & Co. Kids. Click here, to go back to Friday and read my review.

Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday 2

Fiction:

The Dutchess and the Dragon by Jamie Carie, I bought this one and the next two at the used bookstore. I've been wanting this one, and I have not read Jamie Carie, yet so I'm excited about it.

The Pawn by Steven James, I bought this one because I had received the sequel The Rook for review, and thought that both my mom and I would enjoy starting from the beginning.

Distant Heart by Tracey Bateman, I got this one, because I was thinking I have the second and third book in the series, but I'm missing book one, and was ecstatic, until I got home and realized it was book two. So now I have two of book two, and still lack book one Defiant Heart. *sigh*

The Death and Life of Gabriel Phillips by Stephen Baldwin and Mark Tabb, this came via UPS for a CFBA tour, November 19th. Click here for more information.

Out of Her Hands by Megan DiMaria, I got this via USPS for a CFBA tour on November 5th, the problem is that I still need to read book one, Searching for Spice that it took me a while to get my hands on. Click here for more information.

Oh Thursday, I received my order from CBD.com. Oh exciting!! Two non-fiction books, boxes of Christmas cards, and the next few fiction titles...

Ticket to Tomorrow (Book #1 A Fair to Remeber) by Carol Cox
Fair Game (Book #2 A Fair to Remember) by Carol Cox
(I already have read and loved Book #3 A Bride so Fair. Click here to see that review and to read the first chapter.)
Regency Brides by Kimberly Comeaux, a novella including The Vicar's Daughter, The Engagment, and Remember Me. I could not help myself with this one. The cover was too pretty, and the $1.99 price was too good to pass up.

A Stitch in Time by Tracey Bateman, Carol Cox, Cathy Marie Hake, and Vickie McDonough. This is also a novella including four stories from four authors. Basket Stitch by Cathy Marie Hake, Double Cross by Tracey Bateman, Spider Web Rose by Vickie McDonough, and Double Running by Carol Cox. Being the quilter and cross stitcher that I am, this one interests me.

When the Storm Breaks (The Queensland Chronicles, Book #3) by Bonnie Leon
, I was so excited to get this, because they are almost out of stock. I have had the first one for a while, The Heart of Thorton Creek, and through some begging and nice emails with a fabulous author I was able to acquire book #2 For the Love of the Land. So in the near future, no idea what time frame that means, I plan on having a Bonnie Leon week at Creative Madness. Including To Love Anew (Sydney Cove Chronicles #1), Longings of the Heart (Sydney Cove Chronicles #2), and possible more. I'll tell you more when I know more...

The Appomattox Saga (1840-1861): The Rocklin Family at the Dawn of the War Between the States. Three books in one: A Covenant of Love, Gate of His Enemies, and Where Honor Dwells all by Gilbert Morris. I bought this as a "slightly damaged" item, which is always a little scary, but it arrived and I am not too conserned. The dust cover is fairly wrinkled almost from "steam"-like damage and there is residue from a sticker on the back, but I'll live.
Just Jane: A Novel of Jane Austen's Life by Nancy Moser, I had checked this book out from the library to read it and loved it. It was a must for my permanent shelves, so as soon as I saw that it was on sale at CBD, it was mine! Click here to go back and read my review.

And lastly, as a set I purchased Tahn, Return to Alastair, and The Scarlet Trefoil by L.A. Kelly. I have yet to read this series, but it intrigues me and was on sale.

Non-Fiction:

Me, Myself & I AM created by Matthew Peters, Elisa Stanford and Multnomah Press
. I received this in the mail unannounced with directions for a blog tour. After flipping through it I'm very excited to participate, Nov 3rd-7th. Click here, for more information.

The Rosary: A Journey to the Beloved by Gary Jansen, this I got for review and tour thanks to Valerie Russo over at FaithWords through Hatchette Book Group in a box by UPS with the next book. Click here for more information.

Beyond Belief by Josh Hamilton with Tim Keown
, also for reading and reviewing since I'm having this and the former as part of a big giveaway (click here). Click here for more information too.
Losing God: Clinging to Faith through Doubt and Depression by Matt Rogers, this was sent to me by Matt and Intervarsity Press. I was thoroughly impressed with his book When Answers Aren't Enough: Experiencing God as Good when Life isn't. , and being a "depressed" person myself I am very eager to see what Matt has to say in this book. Click here for more information about Losing God and click here for more information about When Answers Aren't Enough.

Mad Mary: Workbook by Liz Curts Higgs, I'd like to point out that I paid $0.99 for this. Yeah, that's right.

Mailbox Monday (First One)

I figure that I'm sharing this information anyway, through out the week, so why not make a post about it to keep things more organized... So I'm jumping on the bandwagon of "Mailbox Monday" hosted by PrintedPage, click here.

All of the "click here" links that you will find below will link you to a previous post on Creative Madness where I give basic information and cover image about the book. If you have any questions about these books and wher you can acquire a copy, please email me. My address is on the sidebar as an image. If you cannot find it, just leave a comment.

Last week, in my mail box/front porch from UPS, I found...

Fiction:
Love Inspired Suspense: Holiday Illusion by Lynette Eason, this book is hitting shelves in November, and I received my copy directly from the author to read and review. Click here, to read more about it.

Dangerous Heart by Tracey Bateman. I'm excited about this one! This is book #3 in the Westward Heart series from Avon Inspire (an imprint of HarperCollins), finishing up for Defiant Heart and Distant Heart. Click here, for more information. This is for read and review received through participation in the CFBA (Christian Fiction Blog Alliance), scheduled for October 27th.

Blood Lines by Mel Odom. This is another one that I'm excited about, in ARC format, and I'm trying to find the first two books in the series from my library. This is book #3 in the NCIS series. Paid in Blood and Blood Evidence both look good. This was recommended to me from my friend Deena of at A Peek at My Bookshelf. I loved Alias the TV show and the related book series, and I enjoy the new TV show NCIS, and I'm sure that I will like a similar book series about it as well. Click here, to find more information about this book in a previous post.

An Irishwoman's Tale by Patti Lacy, this is also for a blog tour through CFBA, scheduled for October 29th, so check back for a possible review. Click here, for more information about this one.

Non Fiction:
Church as a Safe Place: A Handbook by Peter Holmes and Susan Williams, I received this book and the next four others in a box from TBBMedia by surprise for read and review. I'm looking forward to jumping into some of these. They are all from Authentic Media/Authentic Press, click here for more information.

Searching for a Better God by Wade Bradshaw

Pure Gold: Embracing God's Grace by Pam Davis

The Mission Minded Family: Releasing your family to God's destiny by Ann Dunagan

Godly Love: A Rose Planted in the Desert of our Hearts
by Stephen Post, this was also sent to me to read and review from TBBMedia, click here for more information.

Purple State of Mind by Craig Detweiler. I received both the book and DVD. Click here, for a link to the trailer and more information.
